Planting Instructions

Thank you for purchasing vegetation from ONHN.  Below are planting guidelines to assist in successfully growing Ohio’s native vegetation.  Please understand every site is different so these are general guidelines, and some deviation of the following may be required. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

ONHN only grows container stock in Beaver Plastics Styroblock containers 10 cubic inch trays and Stuewe & Sons Tall 1 containers. The multi cell tray was developed by industry professionals and re-forestation nurseries for establishment of an efficient way to grow dense rooted plugs.  The Styroblock containers consist of smooth test tube or carrot like cells containing a dense and thriving root system.  The Tall 1 containers are standalone pots but they mimic the test tube or carrot like shape.  Both growing systems promote vertical root growth and perform air root pruning with openings in the bottom of the cavities and pots.  The deep root system provides longer access to ground water vs. a shallow root system which dry out due to lack of hydrology.

This vertical root growth and soil covered root system means no root exposure during the growing and transport process so plants establish early, grow hardier, and have a higher survival rate.  There are fewer problems with root deformation (J roots) and ease of planting is high.  The plants are ready to grow and thrive in natural conditions.

The 10 cubic inch plugs are planted using a forestry dibble or hand auger with a 2” auger bit.  The Tall 1 containers can be planted using a 4 inch auger.  Options range from using a hand auger to a small bobcat with a auger bit.  Trench planting for the Tall 1 container is also a fast option.  This is performed by excavating a trench then placing multiple Tall 1 container stock within the trench then back fill accordingly.  All plants require up to a half inch of soil covering the top of the plug.  Plants should be watered immediately after planting.  Irrigation may be required if planting in the dry season.

Plant competition and wildlife are primary factors for native plant mortality.  Prior to planting in a vegetated area, scalping a 3 foot by 3 foot area removing all vegetation is recommended prior to planting.  This will ensure the new plant does not have competition from other plants during the initial establishment period.  Fencing or using tree tubes are recommended to deter wildlife damage.  Small rodents will chew on lower portions of the trunk and deer will eat new growth so protecting the plants is critical to early development.

We are here to help restore Ohio’s native vegetation so if you have any questions on growing techniques, please do not hesitate to contact us.  And if we don’t know the answer, we know someone that does so please reach out with questions.
